How to get your matric results 

There are various ways you can use to access your grades. You do not need to be near your school or a government education office to get them. Below are a few ways you can easily get your exam marks.

Four Ways to Check

1. Check Matric Results Online

  •  Department of Basic Education Website

The Department of Basic Education website has an online platform where all the matric results will be released. This is one of the options when looking for your online matric results. All you have to do is log into the Department of Basic Education website.

You will need the following to log in:

  • Exam number (don’t misplace this during the holiday!)
  • Home Language
  • Your personal details (name, surname, etc.)

Things to Note about Department of Basic Education Result Website:

  • The results reflected on the website are the results of the 2019 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination.
  • The Statement of Results is available at the school/exam centre where the candidate wrote.
  • Some candidate’s results may be excluded from the results published on the website because of technical reasons. If a candidate’s results do not show, kindly visit the school/exam centre where you wrote.
  • The Department of Basic Education reserves the right to change any of the information published on the website.
  • If you attended a public/government school, then your results will definitely be available on this site.

For any students who attended private schools that were part of IEB, the same steps apply on the IEB website when the results are released.


  • Go to the IEB Matric Results 2020 Portal
  • Enter your Exam Number & Date of Birth in the required field
  • Click on the ‘Submit‘ button to access your Matric 2020 / 2021 Results

Bear in mind that website traffic will be high on the release date, so expect delayed response times.

  • News 24 Website
Another reputable place that you can find online matric results is News24. This news platform has a page specifically dedicated to the release of the online matric results. Click here to view their release on the 23rd of February 2021.
  • Go to the News24 Matric Results 2020 Portal
  • Enter your Matric Examination Number in the required field
  • Select your exam type, either NSC or IEB.
  • Click on the ‘Search‘ button to access your Matric 2020 Results
  • Note: You may also search NSC Result by province on the News24 website.

Alternative Platforms to Online Matric Results

Online matric results are not the only way to get your results. There are other methods that are just as easy to access. 

2. Check Matric Results in The Newspaper

All the matric results will be in the newspaper just after their release. Many people still use the newspaper to find out their final matric results. 

Next to your examination number in the newspaper will be a BD or a D. BD means that you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree pass, whilst the latter means that you achieved a diploma pass

3. Check Matric Results on Your Cell Phone

Phone SMS

You can use your cell phone (or someone else’s) to receive your results. SABC Education and the Department of Basic Education have provided a service that allows you to get an SMS with your results.  Yep, it’s pretty awesome!  You can register and have your results sent to you as soon as they are released.  How? You have two options:  

  • Register via SMS
    • Send your ID number and exam number to 35658
    • You’ll get a confirmation SMS once you’ve successfully registered.
    • SMSes cost R1 and free SMSes don’t apply
    • Get your matric results immediately when they are released
  • Use the USSD service
    • Dial *120*35658# on the release date
    • Answer a few multiple questions
    • Enter your ID number 
    • You will get your matric results per subject
    • USSD rates apply (Charges 20 cents per seconds)

4. Check Matric Results Through Your High School

The exact day or a day after the initial results are released, your school will give you your results. This is not the official matric certificate, it’s just your results for each subject. You will be able to fetch your official matric certificate in a few months – once it has been printed in full. If you are eager to get exact dates you should contact your school to find out more information. 

You can also go old school by phoning to access your matric results. Beware that lots of matric students will be phoning to find out their results so you might wait for quite a while to get your results.

Understanding Your Matric Results

Whether you have online matric results or find them in the newspaper, you will need to know what they mean.

Here is all the information you need when it comes to understanding your matric results. 

Your Pass Level

When you pass matric, there are a few pass levels you can achieve that will determine how you passed your year. These include:

  • Bachelor Degree Pass
  • Diploma Pass
  • Higher Certificate Pass 
  • NCS Pass

Bachelor Degree Pass

To meet a BD pass, you need:

  • An APS score of 4 in at least 4 high credit subjects 
  • An APS score of 3 in your home language 
  • An APS score of 2 in any 2 other subjects  
  • A total APS score of 23

Diploma Pass

To meet a diploma pass you need:

  • An APS score of at least 3 in your home language 
  • An APS score of at least 3 in 4 high credit subjects 
  • An APS score of 2 in any other 2 subjects 
  • A total APS score of 19

Higher Certificate Pass

To meet an HC pass, you need:

  • An APS score of at least 3 in your home language 
  • An APS score of at least 3 in 2 other subjects 
  • An APS score of 2 in 3 other subjects
  • A total APS score of 15

NSC Pass

To get an NSC pass, you need: 

  • An APS score of at least 3 in your home language 
  • An APS score of at least 3 in 2 other subjects
  • An APS score of 2 in 4 other subjects
  • A total APS score of 14
